Sony is reportedly working on a new portable PlayStation that will rival the Nintendo Switch in the true sense.

After watching Nintendo dominate the gaming landscape over the last eight years with a hybrid game console, Sony is getting ready to challenge the Switch with a new handheld console of its own. Bloomberg reports that Sony is in the early stages of developing a portable game console capable of playing PS5 games natively.

PlayStation 5 games may now be played anywhere thanks to a new portable gaming system that Sony is currently producing. The console is reportedly "years away from launch" — if Sony chooses to release it at all — and is being built to compete with Nintendo and Microsoft in the portable gaming market,

Bloomberg have reported that Sony has a new handheld console in early development, which will allow PlayStation fans to play their PS5 games on the go. This is a true handheld, scrapping the game streaming features of the PlayStation Portal. Games will run natively on the console, much like the Nintendo Switch or the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.

As for what the 'PSP' will be capable of, Bloomberg states that it will build upon the foundations of the PlayStation Portal, but rather than requiring the cloud to stream PS5 games, the device will instead play them natively. In other words, don't expect many (if any) bespoke handheld games like Tearaway or Uncharted: Golden Abyss.
